FRIZZ FREE HAIR AND HOW TO GET IT
YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE. PART 1.
If the arrival of spring/summer kicks off your hair’s frizz behavioural issues and you’re facing a seasonal, day-in-day-out battle to keep your hair smooth whilst fighting the flyaways, this guide is for you. Yes, frizz is a pesky nuisance, but you can have sleek, smooth hair throughout the humid months by following my tips, tricks, and techniques for ‘not today frizz’ hair.
…when there’s moisture in the air, be it humidity or rain, making the hair cuticle (the outer layer of the hair strand) lift, which invites the moisture into the hair shaft, causing frizz. The drier and more damaged your hair is, the more it actively seeks out moisture, making it more frizz-prone.
OTHER FRIZZ FACTORS
Anything that raises the hair cuticle can lead to a frizz outbreak, so avoid:
The Frizz Factor: Vigorous Towel Drying.
When your hair is wet, it is fragile and more vulnerable to damage; scrubbing it dry raises the cuticle, inviting frizz to your door.
Fight the frizz: Gently squeeze your hair with your towel to remove all excess water. Then frizz-proof your hair by working 1-2 pumps of my Happy Ending Nourishing Balm into the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. As well as conditioning the hair, it will also tame frizz, de-fluff, smooth, and define.
The Frizz Factor: Hot Water
As well as stripping the hair of its natural oils and potentially irritating your scalp (which can lead to flakiness, dandruff, and shedding), hot water washing/ rinsing also opens up the hair cuticle, which creates the hair to frizz.
Fight the Frizz: Rinse your hair in cool – not cold (which can also lead to damage and raising of the cuticle) water.
The Frizz Factor: Unprotected Heat Styling
Heat styling your hair at high temperatures without heat protection is an open invitation to frizz. High heat causes the cuticle to lift, and excessive heat can damage the hair shaft leading to dryness and breakage, which makes frizz more pronounced.
Fight the Frizz: Prep, style and protect your hair from the heat of your hairdryer/ straighteners/ tongs with my Save the Do Blow Dry Style Starter. This ultra-light heat-protecting spray creates a protective shield across your hair that also helps smooth the cuticle while adding a light styling hold and promoting shine.
The Frizz Factor: Split Ends
Brittle, split ends are prone to frizz; the longer you leave them untreated, the worse they get and can result in a puffy, frizzy hair halo.
Fight the Frizz: After cleansing, apply my Deeper Love Intense Treatment Mask to your hair, comb it through and leave for five minutes before rinsing. This treatment is clinically proven to seal split ends from first use – infusing the hair with moisture and preventing frizz
The Frizz Factor: Your Hairbrush
Vigorous hair brushing when hair is wet or dry and using a hairbrush with metal/plastic/hard bristles or a fine-tooth comb can all cause the cuticle to lift and invite in frizz.
Fight the Frizz: Use a wide-toothed comb or a special wet brush when the hair is wet/damp – they have flexible teeth that are deliberately spaced apart so there is less tension put on the hair. When brushing dry hair, always start at the ends, working your way up to the roots. And take your time; the condition of your hair depends on it!
