I am a huge fan of the hairdresser Sam McKnight’s range of products, because they all do a very specific job and they all do exactly what they say they’ll do — no surprises or underwhelming results. There isn’t a bathroom shelf in the land that wouldn’t benefit from a can of Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist, and the Happy Endings Nourishing Balm is incredibly useful and effective if you’re prone to fluff or frizz.

Also he has these brilliant dry shampoo wipes called Lazy Girl Bio-degradable Hair Cleanse Cloths, which are fantastic on roots and fringes and less faff than traditional dry shampoo (though he does a very good one of those too) — you literally rub away the dirt and debris, kind of like a baby wipe but for the hair.I must just digress to extol the weird and creepy virtues of baby wipes, in case there’s someone reading who still isn’t aware: in brief, there is no stain that a baby wipe can’t handle. Food down the front of your favourite dress, even if it’s silk? Baby wipe. Wine on the rug? Baby wipe (dunked in hot water that contains a dash of Fairy Liquid). Fake tan or hair dye in the wrong place? Baby wipe. Muddy paw prints on the sofa? Babywipe. Grubby keyboards,dull leather goods, sweat stains on white T-shirts, dusty plants, bird poo on the windscreen? Baby wipes. And so on. Also they’re really handy if you accidentally transfer make-up onto clothes while you’re getting dressed. As I’m sure I don’t need to point out, most baby wipes contain plastic and aren’t compostable or biodegradable, so make sure you buy ones that are, such as Jackson Reece.

But back to hair, specifically big, fat hair that looks fuller than it actually is, in the form of Cool Girl Superlift Volumising Spray (£26). As the name indicates, this is a relative of the hallowed Cool Girl texturising mist. This one is turbocharged because it is heat-activated. You wash your hair, towel dry it reasonably thoroughly, section it and spray this on at the roots, though to be honest I’m not always very precise or careful with the sectioning bit. Roots are the point. Then you blow-dry as normal, and ka-boing: the volume of your dreams and tons of lift at the actual roots. You’re not suddenly going to have hilarious, huge 1980s hair that’s bouffy and doesn’t move — this is medium hold and looks entirely natural; it also adds a nice bit of shine. You can also use it on dry hair in between washes — just make sure to activate it with a few blasts of a dryer. Indispensable. ■ @indiaknight
