BEAUTIFUL HAIR. BEAUTIFUL PLANET.
Sustainability is a bit like achieving ultimate hair health – it’s a journey, not an overnight sensation. This year, we've partnered with the brilliant minds at Shellworks to wrap our newest launch, Pure Genius Scalp Restoring Oil, and our iconic bestseller, Dressed to Kill Define & Defrizz Crème, in Vivomer – a material that fully composts within a year. No plastics. No centuries in landfill. Just a graceful exit after doing its job.

WHY VIVOMER?
Vivomer is a stable, scalable, safe, and high-performance alternative to plastic that is home-compostable and leaves no trace once disposed of. Crafted from a biopolymer made by natural microbes and derived from plants, Vivomer offers the strength and resilience of plastic without the environmental impact.
Naturally pigmented, beautifully functional, and stable throughout its use, Vivomer works in harmony with nature. At the end of a product’s life, nature reclaims it—whether in home compost, soil, or landfill. Naturally abundant microbes recognize it as nourishment, gently breaking it down until nothing remains but the earth it came from.
HOW IT BREAKS DOWN
-
After 12 weeks in a home compost, Vivomer packaging will show visible signs of decomposition, with thinner areas potentially breaking down completely.
-
After approximately 52 weeks in a healthy home compost, Vivomer packaging will have fully broken down into natural components that contribute to compost.
OUR COMMITMENT
Sustainability is a journey, and at Hair by Sam McKnight, we care about hair as much as we care about our planet. We are continuously innovating and discovering new ways to minimize our environmental impact while ensuring the highest performance of our products.
Our efforts include compostable packaging, responsible sourcing, and driving real change for a cleaner, greener future.
- Pure Genius Natural Scalp Oil introduces cartons made from agricultural waste (leaves and stems), produced using 100% green energy. All other cartons are FSC-certified, ensuring responsible sourcing from managed forests.
- All wet spray packaging transitions to 100% PCR bottles, manufactured in the UK. By sourcing and producing closer to home, we cut down on unnecessary emissions, reduce transportation impact, and support local manufacturing.
"Our products are inspired by nature - from our botanical ingredients to the fine fragrance reminiscent of my garden after the rain. My garden brings me joy and fuels my creativity. I never use pesticides and embrace composting, which sparked the idea for our first fully compostable Lazy Girl Hair Cleanse Cloths.
I know sustainability is a journey, and at Hair by Sam McKnight we continuously evaluate our choices - striving to reduce our impact without compromising product efficacy wherever possible. This year, I’m beyond excited to launch new sustainable products in Vivomer packaging. For me, caring for our planet isn’t just a choice - it’s a responsibility we all share."
— Sam McKnight
"It’s been incredible seeing the beauty packaging industry develop over the last few years. Sourcing sustainable solutions and sourcing in the UK is no longer just the right thing to do, but the commercial thing to do in many instances - this is how real change happens. And we couldn’t be more pleased to be at the forefront at Hair by Sam McKnight."
