FEATHER FEVER WITH DRIES VAN NOTEN
Paris Fashion Week is a highlight of my calendar each and every year. Never one to shy away from a statement look, it was Feather Fever this year at Dries Van Noten, where fringes and faux mullets were transformed into colourful plumages by Team McKnight. Reminding me of our viral moment in 2020 when feather partings ruled the Dries Van Noten runway, read on to find out how we got the look - and give it a go yourself!
DRIES VAN NOTEN AW20
Marrying Serge Lutens' photography with the early-Eighties club scene, our iconic Feather Partings sprayed with Modern Hairspray blended seamlessly into low, sleek ponytails. Creating this optical illusion of colourful root partings brought to life the vision of late-night partying across London.
Hair was parted and combed back into low ponytails using Self Control Gel and Modern Hairspray for hold and shine.
With hair extension glue dotted along the parting using a pintail comb, the shaft of the feather is placed into the parting. Using a brush and Modern Hairspray, the feather's colourful fibres were then combed on either side into the rest of the hair, following the direction of the ponytail until the fibres blended into the strands and the feather became a seamless pop of colour.
For a bolder look, the process was repeated with a second feather and then sealed with a generous mist of Modern Hairspray.
Complementing the explosions of colour that chequered the nocturnally-inspired Dries Van Noten runway, our Feather Partings are making waves three years on, with over 120 million views on content recreating our look. It's a creative and exciting way to inject some runway glamour into your roots - even the papers are talking about it! Make sure to give it a try this Autumn.
DRIES VAN NOTEN SS24
Revisiting Feather Fever along with the Cool Girl Clean feeling this SS24, we created feathery faux fringes and mullets against the backdrop of fresh, healthy hair that embraced its natural texture.
Separating each model’s hair into sections, Dressed To Kill Define and Defrizz Creme is applied evenly from root to tip to create a groomed, polished, fresh finish.
Feathers are added individually around the fringe and nape in a delicate and precise manner by adding a small dot of hair extension glue onto each feather's shaft, and securing to hair strands. The feathery extension is then set in place with a cool shot from a hairdryer.
Layered up to create a face-framing effect, feathers are lightly tapped with a flat iron to add curl and dimension. A mist of Modern Hairspray for hold and lasting shine completes the flirty, feathering look.
